For a long while it was thought that keeping bees on the site would fit well with our other activities – and in 2015 the opportunity arose when an established local beekeeper retired and was looking to sell on his bees and equipment…so the Knucklas Bee Group was established.

We acquired three colonies of bees that were relocated in the depths of winter (while still dormant) to their new home on the edge of the woods, in the field above the KCCLP allotments. As the weather warmed, so the bees became active and in no time were busy pollinating allotment plants and bringing home nectar.

The bee group began with three members  (currently just two). We were all complete beginners when we started, but have been fortunate to have the help and advice of many local beekeepers, who have been generous with their time. We have learned much, but there are still many mysteries about the ways of bees.

Our aims are to promote all kinds of food production on community–owned land, both through the work the bees do as pollinators and through the harvesting of honey. The honey that we take from the bees is divided between the beekeepers and KCCLP – whose share is sold to raise money for the Land Project. (Principally at this stage it goes towards the purchase of the land). KCCLP honey can be bought at our Allotment Open Day, Apple Day and other events and is now also available at the Rhos Market Garden shop in Knighton.
