Castle that Time Forgot

Castle that Time Forgot

The remains of a Welsh castle and the woods where King Arthur is said to have wooed Guinevere have been purchased by local residents as a community land trust. Knucklas Hill, right on the Welsh-English border between Ludlow and Llandrindod Wells, is part of a sixteen-acre site that was bought by the community at auction. People will be able to buy shares in the trust so that they can play their part in owning and managing the space. They are planning allotments, a nature reserve and woodland, so preserving the site and opening it to public access.

Little remains of the original Knucklas Castle, built in the mid-13th century. It was attacked and destroyed by forces loyal to Owain Glyndwr during his rebellion in 1402.

Now a place long associated with kings and princes is to be a community-owned site, a People’s Castle no less.

COMMENT:

Thanks Martin for the mention at ‘politics for people’ – and yes, it’s great to have a “People’s Castle” on our doorstep in Knucklas.

Knucklas Castle Community Land Trust Ltd. should be in place around the end of February when all the legal papers are signed sealed and delivered.

The whole of the Teme Valley is vibrating with excitement – and over such a fine high point too. Have you been up to the top of the Castle mound yourself yet …. breathtaking views on 360 degrees – no wonder they put a castle up there.

We’ve got a lot to do and we need a lot of help so spread the word to all so they can buy a share in its future and the future of community ownership.

Knucklas Castle Mound and fields – an area of natural beauty long associated with kings and princes, becomes a community-owned site, as you say Martin, a “People’s Castle”.

A great day to you

Castle hill

A new view of the castle using LiDR technology has become available, look here: LiDR survey
Many thanks to Mark Walters for this new view.

It raises some interesting questions about the way the castle has been used over the many years of its existence.

We are also on the Welsh governments catalogue of heritage buildings here Coflein
